Leningrad, 1938. An employee of the authorities, Captain Fyodor Volkonogov, who was previously in good standing with his superiors, is forced to go on the run and hide from former colleagues. At night, a colleague shot the day before appears to him and reports that eternal torment has already been waiting for him in hell, but this can be avoided if he repents before his death, and at least one person will forgive him. Captain Volkonogov goes to the relatives of the repressed in search of forgiveness.
